Why SSL Matters
Protecting Your Website and Building Trust

A comprehensive overview of SSL certificates, including types, benefits, and managed services—perfect for educating customers and selling professional SSL solutions.

What is SSL?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It is a security technology that establishes an encrypted link between a web server and a web browser. This is done to ensure that all data passed between the two systems will remain private and secure.

  • Data Encryption – Protects information, such as credit card numbers, logins, passwords, and personal data.

  • HTTPS & Padlock Icon – Indicates a secure website, improving trust.

  • SEO Boost – Google favors HTTPS sites in rankings.

  • Customer Confidence – Users are more likely to stay on and make a purchase from a secure site.

A Wildcard SSL certificate secures a domain and all its subdomains with one certificate.

Example: *.webspace4rent.com covers: webspace4rent.comstore.webspace4rent.comresell.webspace4rent.com

  • Cost-effective – One certificate for many subdomains.

  • Simplified Management – Easier to install and renew.

  • Same Level of Encryption – Strong protection across all subdomains.

Note: Wildcard SSLs only cover one level of subdomains.

What is Domain Validation (DV)

Domain Validation (DV) is the simplest and fastest type of SSL certificate validation. It verifies that the person or organization requesting the certificate has control over the domain name, but it does not verify the identity of the site owner. To issue a DV SSL certificate, the Certificate Authority (CA) checks that the applicant controls the domain through one of the following methods:

  • Email Verification: A confirmation email is sent to an administrative email address, such as admin@yourdomain.com.

  • DNS Record: The applicant adds an exceptional DNS TXT record to the domain.

  • HTTP File Upload: A file is uploaded to the website’s root directory for the CA to verify.

  • Encryption: Strong encryption (same as higher-level certs)

  • Speed: Issued quickly—ideal for instant setup

  • Cost: Most affordable SSL option

  • Identity Verification: No organization or company details are verified

  • Browser Indicators: HTTPS & padlock icon, but no business name shown

  • Best Use Cases for DV SSL are Personal websites and blogs, Portfolios and hobby sites, and Basic informational websites

What is Extended Validation?

Extended Validation (EV) SSL is the highest level of SSL certificate. It not only secures the connection but also verifies the legal identity of the organization.

  • Complete verification of legal and physical business existence.

  • The organization’s name appears in the certificate info.

  • Provides greater trust for financial, medical, and e-commerce sites.

What is Managed SSL?

Managed SSL Services mean that a provider fully manages your SSL certificate. Includes purchasing, installing, configuring, renewing, and supporting the certificate.

  • Automated installation and configuration

  • Auto-renewal before expiry

  • Professional support

  • Uptime and security monitoring

  • No technical skills required
